Equitative mobility

All citizens are entitled to move about the city in a sustainable, safe, healthy way. For this to be possible, public areas must be distributed according to a hierarchy of priorities putting pedestrians and cyclists ahead of other modes of transport and reserving areas for public transport in addition to that used by private vehicles.

This will allow citizens to pursue their daily activities in Barcelona on foot, by bike or using collective transport, without having to depend exclusively on private vehicles. Barcelona's compactness has traditionally favoured this low energy-intense and environmentally sound mobility as the distances and relief together with the variety of uses and activities in each neighbourhood and district have made this possible.

The progressive extending, in recent years, of pavements and pedestrian and cycling areas in Barcelona and the consequent reduction in areas for traffic and parking of motor vehicles, along with an improvement in the public transport system with a view to making it accessible to a larger number of people has responded to this municipal wish to share the available space in a more equitable way, promoting social uses in streets and making sustainable mobility a tool for inclusion and human cohesion. The 2013-2018 Urban Mobility Plan also integrates these proposals and suggests a series of measures for continuing to invest efforts in the creation of more comfortable, safer public areas.
