From Barcelona to Sitges, a classic

Rally. On Sunday, the 60th edition of the International Vintage Car Rally Barcelona - Sitges will take place; tasked with starting the race in Plaça de Sant Jaume is Marta Carranza, Sports Commissioner at Barcelona City Council.

This Sunday morning, at 10:30 am, in Plaça de Sant Jaume, will play host to one of the most important events in Barcelona for lovers of motor racing and history, the Ral·li Internacional de Cotxes d’Època Barcelona – Sitges, a historic event that garners interest from across Europe and one of the most highly anticipated motoring events of the year.

A historic event

The first edition of the rally was held on 8 February 1959, when more than twenty vehicles lined up in Plaça de Sant Jaume before heading off to Sitges. This trial became known as the Garraf “coastal race”, which is how the course is now commonly known. Interestingly, since the first edition, organisers have only required that drivers meet one condition: they dress in accordance with the period in which their vehicle was manufactured, thus leaving a historic legacy.

Drivers and vehicles, the perfect combination

The participants are the heart and soul of the rally, along with the vintage vehicles themselves. Drivers are the essence of the event, pampering their vehicles year after year with a view to participating in future editions of the rally. They are, in short, the driving force of the occasion.

A historic route

The route that links Barcelona to Sitges is one of the most emblematic aspects of the race. It takes in 8 towns in the metropolitan area of Barcelona city over the 46 kilometres travelled as part of the race, kicking off in Barcelona, before heading through Hospitalet de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Viladecans, Gavà, Castelldefels and finally Sitges.

Over the coming days and up until Sunday 4 March, Barcelona l’Illa Diagonal Shopping Centre (Avinguda Diagonal, 557), will be exhibiting some of the cars that have been entered into the Ral·li Internacional de Cotxes d’Època Barcelona – Sitges.
