The Bicycle Festival 2018 included a mass bike ride, a fair with stalls from different entities and associations and a number of activities for young and old alike to pay homage to this healthy and sustainable means of transport.
The day began with a popular bike ride, bringing together people of all ages from 9 am onwards. The 12 km route started at the junction between C/ Aragó and C/ Roger de Flor and went around the city centre before ending up in Pg. Lluís Companys.
The finish point was then the scene for a fair with stalls from different entities and associations, along with over twenty activities relating to the world of the bicycle, through until 2.30 pm. Besides commercial stalls from the cycling sector, the public were able to find out about regulations on the use of bicycles, promoting safer and more civic mobility. Some 8,000 maps were also handed out with up-to-date information on the city’s network of bike lanes, as well as other information of interest such as tram operating directions and the locations of Bicing stations.
Activities at the festival to promote the use of the bicycle included children’s races and workshops, circuits with adapted bicycles, acrobatics and magic performances. Ten teams of mechanics also took part in a competition to build a bike from recycled parts. The activity area also offered a refreshments service and a bike parking zone.
The initiative is part of the programme for World Bicycle Day, which takes place on 19 April and offers various activities around the city. In addition, as part of the international event, the City Council and the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) have launched the challenge #30diesAMBbiciBCN, to promote the regular use of the bicycle in the city and help towards emissions-free mobility which doesn’t generate noise and improves people’s health.
